Mark Peters Director of strategic advisory services

Mark is an accomplished water resources advisor, strategic planner, policy advisor, and civil engineer with 25 years of experience, in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector, working in 21 countries on six continents. Mark’s experience working with a broad range of stakeholders, including nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government institutions, bilateral and multilateral organizations and the private sector, in a variety of geographic and political contexts, enables him to effectively assess current situationsguide organizations through stages of project life cycles, and adaptively manage projects within changing environments. Mark provides strategic insights to partnerships between public and private sector institutions and is an effective communicator and coordinator within and between various entities, ensuring collaborative and effective programming.  

After nine years working for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in India and the Middle East, Mark joined Water For People in 2019 where he is building Water For People’s Strategic Advisory Services portfolio to help scale effective WASH approaches. Throughout his career, he has led a multitude of WASH related initiatives around the globe, collaborating closely with local government institutions and communities to support in planning, financingpolicy influence, and providing technical expertise, including coordinating WASH activities of more than 140 organizations in Zimbabwe, large infrastructure projects in the West Bank & Gaza, and initiatives to eliminate open defecation with the Government of IndiaMark has also supported designing innovative financing models and creating an enabling environment for private sector engagement, to ensure initiatives are sustainable without continued aid.  

He has master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Business Administration from Colorado State University.
