Water For People India and its partners are developing the prototype for a pit life extender (using membranes) and a compact mobile treatment unit. A Pit Life extender is a compact treatment unit, meant for treatment of liquid effluent (urine and watery fecal matter) of pit latrines, household septic tanks and leach pits on daily basis. The prototype uses membrane filters and other filters to treat the effluent. If this prototype is effective and inexpensive to produce, it could be used by, among others, pit emptying entrepreneurs, reducing the cost and difficulty of pit emptying.
