Mauricio Villagra Interim Country Director - Nicaragua

Mauricio is an experienced business and finance professional with 10 years of experience implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs with Water For People, bringing expertise in microfinance, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), sanitation markets, and local stakeholder capacity building.

In 2011, Mauricio joined Water For People as Financial Administrator with the Nicaragua country program. Due to his extensive previous experience in business development with cooperative organizations and microfinance institutions, he has led the Sustainable Sanitation & Sanitation Markets initiatives in Nicaragua since 2012. Mauricio spearheaded this initiative and now trains other global Water For People staff and programs on the process for establishing sanitation markets, ensuring the programs have been developed and are managed in a sustainable manner. His long tenure with Water For People and strong capacity for training make him an invaluable resource and essential for Water For People to scale its programs.

Mauricio currently serves as the Interim Country Director for Water For People in Nicaragua, in which he is responsible for managing all aspects of country program implementation. Mauricio provides leadership for national advocacy, learning and scale initiatives, and manages a wide range of external relationships at the national and local levels.

He has a degree in Public Finance and Accounting from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua and a master’s in Business Administration from the Popular University of Nicaragua. He is a Certified Public Accountant and Business Administrator.
