Cada ma\u00f1ana, me levantaba alrededor de las 5 am y caminaba tres kil\u00f3metros en busca de agua. Cuando crec\u00ed, imagin\u00e9 un mundo donde el acceso al agua fuera simple. Siempre me preguntaba: <em>\u00bfC\u00f3mo ser\u00eda levantarse y buscar agua limpia en casa o en el vecindario?<\/em> So\u00f1\u00e9 con esa vida y resolv\u00ed que cuando creciera, har\u00eda todo lo posible para ayudar a las personas a acceder al agua. Despu\u00e9s de la secundaria, mi sue\u00f1o era ser un ingeniero dedicado a resolver problemas de agua.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avance r\u00e1pido hasta mediados de la d\u00e9cada de 2000, complet\u00e9 mis estudios de ingenier\u00eda y comenc\u00e9 mi carrera de ingenier\u00eda como profesor universitario. En 2010, me un\u00ed al Ministerio de Infraestructura de Ruanda (MININFRA), donde trabaj\u00e9 en la planificaci\u00f3n y el seguimiento de proyectos de suministro de agua. Mi sue\u00f1o de la infancia persisti\u00f3, empuj\u00e1ndome a involucrarme a\u00fan m\u00e1s. Dos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, me un\u00ed a Water For People en Ruanda y me encargaron administrar la implementaci\u00f3n del Programa Rulindo Challenge, un plan muy ambicioso para llevar agua a toda la poblaci\u00f3n del distrito de Rulindo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En mi primer viaje a Rulindo, un distrito de gran altitud donde la mayor\u00eda de las comunidades viven en lo alto de las colinas, me enter\u00e9 de que las personas ten\u00edan dificultades para acceder al agua. En ese viaje conoc\u00ed a una mujer llamada Marianne, madre de ocho hijos, quien me dijo que viaja hasta dos horas para sacar agua de un arroyo que corre cuesta abajo. Escuch\u00e9 que la mayor\u00eda de las personas en esta comunidad solo pod\u00edan comprar uno o dos bidones de agua de 20 litros por d\u00eda para una familia promedio de seis.<sup>I<\/sup> Debido a que la distancia era demasiado larga y la tarea demasiado cansada, las familias aprendieron a usar menos agua, incluso cuando eso significaba pasar d\u00edas sin ducharse. Los ni\u00f1os faltaban a la escuela porque ten\u00edan que buscar agua, y las personas que no pod\u00edan ir a buscar agua por s\u00ed mismas ten\u00edan que pagar m\u00e1s.<sup>yo<\/sup>Las historias que comparti\u00f3 Marianne fueron desgarradoras y me recordaron el viaje que emprend\u00ed cuando era ni\u00f1o.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Escuch\u00e9 atentamente las historias de c\u00f3mo las madres, los padres y los ni\u00f1os lucharon. Perdieron oportunidades simplemente porque no ten\u00edan agua. No dejaba de pensar en c\u00f3mo podr\u00eda ayudarlos a encontrar soluciones. Sab\u00eda que no ser\u00eda un trabajo f\u00e1cil, pero ten\u00eda que intentarlo.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Como exconferencista, tuve la idea de contratar ingenieros graduados de mi antigua universidad para ayudar a dise\u00f1ar sistemas de suministro de agua que aseguraran que todas las comunidades, escuelas y cl\u00ednicas de salud tuvieran acceso a agua potable segura. La idea fue totalmente apoyada por Water For People y sus socios, quienes la vieron como una oportunidad para apoyar a los j\u00f3venes ingenieros a crecer en sus carreras y ayudar a las comunidades necesitadas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debido a la naturaleza monta\u00f1osa del distrito de Rulindo, y de Ruanda en general, se tuvo que bombear agua a las cimas de las colinas donde vive la mayor\u00eda de las comunidades. Esto requiri\u00f3 una fuerte inversi\u00f3n para construir sistemas de agua con estaciones de bombeo. El transporte de maquinaria y equipos pesados sobre terreno monta\u00f1oso y, a menudo, sin desarrollar no era f\u00e1cil. Tengo recuerdos v\u00edvidos de las muchas veces que tuvimos que reunir a miembros de la comunidad local para que nos ayudaran a transportar el equipo por terrenos irregulares y resbaladizos. Amarrar\u00edan este equipo pesado en troncos de \u00e1rboles y llevar\u00edan la carga sobre sus hombros hasta el destino. Fue un trabajo muy exigente, pero que demostr\u00f3 su determinaci\u00f3n y la necesidad de acercar el agua a las comunidades.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La falta de asentamientos planificados fue la barrera m\u00e1s significativa para llegar a Todos en Rulindo. En ese momento, la gente viv\u00eda dispersa, a trav\u00e9s de colinas y monta\u00f1as. Era dif\u00edcil llegar a todos los hogares. Como socios trabajaron juntos para idear una soluci\u00f3n, con la ayuda de la Autoridad de Vivienda de Ruanda, el distrito se comprometi\u00f3 a desarrollar planes f\u00edsicos de \u00e1reas residenciales donde las personas pudieran vivir de manera segura y en entornos m\u00e1s organizados.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despu\u00e9s de que los planes de asentamientos f\u00edsicos estuvieron disponibles, descubr\u00ed que algunos asentamientos planificados no ten\u00edan infraestructura de agua, y otras comunidades que ya ten\u00edan agua no eran asentamientos planificados. Tuve que volver a la mesa de dibujo para determinar c\u00f3mo se podr\u00eda llegar mejor a esas \u00e1reas desatendidas y desatendidas con agua potable segura. Con base en esos hallazgos, la infraestructura de agua que faltaba se dise\u00f1\u00f3 para garantizar que todos los asentamientos planificados en todo el distrito fueran atendidos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Con mi pasi\u00f3n por el agua y la inspiraci\u00f3n derivada de Marianne y sus vecinos, combinada con la determinaci\u00f3n de todos los socios del Rulindo Challenge Program, el distrito de Rulindo logr\u00f3 una cobertura de infraestructura de suministro de agua universal en 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoy, cuando recuerdo de d\u00f3nde venimos y hacia d\u00f3nde nos dirigimos, tengo muchas emociones. Primero, me llena de orgullo y felicidad haber tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en un proyecto que deja una huella imborrable en la vida de la poblaci\u00f3n del distrito de Rulindo y genera un cambio positivo. En segundo lugar, siento que no hay desaf\u00edos que no se puedan superar. Llevar servicios de agua y saneamiento seguros y confiables a cada una de las 494 aldeas del distrito no fue poca cosa, y estoy orgulloso de que hayamos podido lograr los objetivos del Programa Desaf\u00edo Rulindo. Todos los d\u00edas, cuando voy a trabajar, llevo la resiliencia, el apoyo y la colaboraci\u00f3n de mis colegas de Water For People y todos los socios. Es este nivel de colaboraci\u00f3n y asociaci\u00f3n lo que llev\u00f3 al Desaf\u00edo Rulindo a una conclusi\u00f3n exitosa. Ahora inspira mi trabajo diario y mantiene viva mi determinaci\u00f3n de garantizar que todos tengan acceso a agua potable. No puedo esperar para asumir mi pr\u00f3ximo desaf\u00edo y continuar haciendo realidad el sue\u00f1o de mi infancia para miles de personas en Ruanda y m\u00e1s all\u00e1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure
