Pero en muchos pa\u00edses donde trabajamos, los sistemas de alcantarillado no existen. La mejor soluci\u00f3n de saneamiento en esas \u00e1reas es una letrina de pozo como las de la zona urbana de Kampala, que requiere el vaciado peri\u00f3dico de desechos, una tarea ardua que puede ser costosa y lenta. En la India, Water For People est\u00e1 probando una tecnolog\u00eda de membrana que servir\u00eda como un &quot;extensor de vida \u00fatil&quot;, aumentando el tiempo entre el vaciado del pozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los desechos l\u00edquidos se acumulan en las letrinas mucho m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que los desechos s\u00f3lidos. Si el agua puede manejarse y eliminarse, las letrinas podr\u00edan funcionar hasta diez veces m\u00e1s entre vaciado. La tecnolog\u00eda de membranas que se est\u00e1 probando en India involucra una serie de cuatro membranas dise\u00f1adas para filtrar diferentes bacterias, pat\u00f3genos y otra materia org\u00e1nica. Esta agua filtrada se puede reutilizar para enjuagar o, a medida que avanza la tecnolog\u00eda, el agua idealmente podr\u00eda cumplir con los est\u00e1ndares de descarga y volver a liberarse al medio ambiente.
